Format Manuscript (Typography)

Format manuscript lets you define the typography of your whole project in one place. Instead of formatting each paragraph by hand, you configure how every paragraph, heading, or blockquote should look — and every block of that type updates instantly, across all manuscripts in the project.

How it works

• Manuscript formatting is purely visual — it changes how your text is displayed (and exported), not the text itself.
• You configure one style per block type: paragraph, headings H1–H4, blockquote, lists, tables, and more.
• Any manual formatting you apply to specific words (a bold phrase, a different font on one line) always wins over the template style.

Editing styles

1. Open the Format manuscript sidebar from the editor.
2. Pick a block type (e.g. Paragraph or Heading 1).
3. Adjust its properties. Changes apply live to everything in the project.

What you can configure

Text blocks (paragraph, H1–H4):

• Font family, font size, line height, letter spacing
• Text alignment and paragraph spacing
• Margin before and after
• Headings additionally: bold, italic, underline, and borders

Container blocks (blockquote, lists, tables, media, code blocks):

• Margin before and after

Resetting manual overrides

If you’ve hand-formatted text and want to return to the template look:

• Apply to all — a button at the bottom of the sidebar that clears the manual overrides on every block of the selected type in the document you have open.
• Re-apply style — available per block in the drag-handle menu, resets just that block.

Apply to all asks you to confirm first, because it removes rather than adds: the font, size, colour, bold, italic, underline and line spacing you applied by hand to those blocks are cleared, so they all fall back to the preset. Blocks of other types are left alone, and the text itself never changes.

Formatting notes and entity pages

Notes and Bible entities have their own preset, Format wiki, opened from the sidebar of a note or entity page. It works exactly like Format manuscript and is configured the same way — the two keep separate settings, so the typography of your book and the typography of your notes never affect each other. Its block types differ slightly: it offers callouts and page embeds, and has no scene break.

Turning off heading decorations

If your Heading style is bold but you want one specific heading not bold, just select it and toggle bold off — the editor records that as a “not bold here” override on top of the template. The same works for italic and underline.

Manuscript formatting and export

Your manuscript formatting is fully applied on PDF export, including custom fonts — what you see in the editor is what your readers get.

Note

Formatting changes are not part of the editor’s undo history — if you change a style and don’t like it, change it back in the Format manuscript sidebar.
